Our History

A Living Landmark

Established 1912

Our founding came about from a need for a safe, professional, and readily available collateral lending establishment at the turn of the 20th century, long before the banking system had evolved into what it is today, replete with credit lines and credit cards readily available. In an effort to create some middle ground in San Francisco, some of the city's civic leaders joined together and on December 12, 1912 opened San Francisco Remedial Loan Association. It was modeled, both in philosophy and in its physical look, on New York's famous Provident Loan Society. In 1951, the name was changed to San Francisco Provident Loan Association to more closely define its status and place in the city. In 2009 we rebranded ourselves as simply San Francisco Provident. We are one of the few historic businesses in the Bay Area that still stands in its original landmark setting.

Tradition

San Francisco Provident has been family owned and operated since 1951. We celebrate having several generations on both sides of the counter. Both our business and building were built to last. As we've surpassed our 100th anniversary, our original design of being a banking institution based on collateral lending has grown to include being recognized as one of the premiere estate jewelry dealers in the country.

Services You Can Trust

San Francisco Provident's promise is to treat every customer with the honesty and respect they deserve in a confidential and always helpful manner. We pride ourselves in our history, customer service, and impeccable reputation. As it has been for the past 100 years, your satisfaction is guaranteed.
