A Living Landmark
Established 1912
Our founding came about from a need for a safe, professional, and readily
available collateral lending establishment at the turn of the 20th century.
The average person needing a loan at that time had to rely on the services of the
neighborhood "loan shark". This was long before the banking system had evolved
to what it is today, replete with credit lines and credit cards readily available.
In an effort to create some middle ground in San Francisco, some of the city’s
civic leaders joined together and on December 12, 1912 opened San Francisco
Remedial Loan Association. It was modeled, both in philosophy and in its
physical look, on New York’s famous Provident Loan Society.
In 1951, the name was changed to San Francisco Provident Loan Association
to more closely define its status and place in this city. We remain one of the
few historic businesses that still stand in their original landmark setting.
One of the largest lending institutions in the country.
Provident Loan Association has been family owned and operated since 1951.
We celebrate having several generations on both sides of the counter.
Both our business and building were built to last. As we approach our 100th
anniversary, our original design of being a banking institution based on
collateral lending has evolved to include now being one of the larger
wholesale and closeout jewelery dealers in the country.
